National Service Scheme (NSS)
The National Service Scheme, a permanent student youth programme had been implemented in Educational Institutions with financial assistance from the Central and State Governments in the ratio 7:5 from the year 1969 and the same has now been included in the Central Sector Schemes with 100% grants from Government of India.
The motto of NSS is Not Me But You. The overall objective is Development of Personality of Student Youth through Community Service.
A wide range of activities under this programme aim at inculcating positive values, developing leadership qualities, national integration & social harmony, promoting healthy life styles, enhancing employability skills etc. These activities are carried out under two major areas namely, Regular and Special Camping
Programmes. At present 45500 students from 348 Polytechnic Colleges spread all over Tamil Nadu are participating in NSS activities.
The Directorate has instituted 42 NSS Awards to recognize the outstanding contribution of Polytechnic Colleges (NSS Units), Programme Officers and Volunteers during the DOTE NSS Silver Jubilee Year.
The Directorate of Technical Education and the Programme Coordinator received the prestigious Indira Gandhi National NSS Award during the year 2005-06.
