Launching of CIICP and its sustainability
The Canada India Institutional Cooperation Project (CIICP) is a Human Resource Development Project in Technical Education Department, launched in the year 1991 through a Memorandum of Understanding between Government of Canada and Government of India. Government of Canada through Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) funded the Project. The Project was implemented from 1993-1999 by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) under the overall direction of Ministry Of Human Resource Development, Government of India. When the project aided by the Canadian Government came to an end in March 1999, it came under the exclusive control of Government of Tamil Nadu. The project initiatives are being replicated and implemented very effectively from the self generated fund of the Project on a sustainable and self-supporting basis in the Polytechnic Colleges in Tamil Nadu under the Policy support of Government of Tamil Nadu, without any financial commitment to the Govt.
In Tamil Nadu 127 Polytechnic Colleges are implementing the CIICP initiatives for Institution Development and carrying out various activities under the thrust areas: Strategic Planning, Management Information System, Continuing and Non Formal Education, Staff Development, Student Services, Industry Institute Interaction, Women In Development, Environment Development, Equipment Repair Centre. Some of the Polytechnic Colleges implementing CIICP have also established, One to One Linkage with Canadian Community Colleges, to share the expertise in Technical Education.
Continuing Education Courses
Skill-oriented, tailor-made, short-tem courses are being offered, to the students, public and employees of Industries, under Continuing Education in Polytechnic Colleges implementing CIICP. Annually, about 30,000 beneficiaries comprising students, public and industrial personnel are trained in various skills related to over 320 trades through Continuing Education Programs conducted by Continuing Education Cell of the Polytechnic Colleges. The impact of this Project is very much encouraging especially in raising the socio-economic status of the poor and uneducated youth.
In carrying out the initiatives under CIICP the Polytechnic Colleges have close collaboration with Industries such as Saint Gobain Glass India Ltd., TVS Motors, Rane Group of Companies, Ford India Ltd., Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Ltd.,
Industry oriented Training Programmes organized by SPCU
MoU was signed between SPCU-DOTE and various Industries such as Saint Gobain Glass India Ltd., Teems India Towerlines Ltd. to train and certify the students as well as engineers and professionals to provide employment in the respective Industries. The curriculum for the Industry oriented programmes were developed by Curriculum Advisory Committee comprising experts from the Industry and Polytechnic Colleges under the auspices of SPCU functioning under the control of DOTE, using an innovative process known as DACUM (Developing a Curriculum). The topics covered under this programme were Skill Development for a specific trade, Project Management, Structural Glazing Technology, Quantity Surveying, Environmental aspects such as Health & Safety, Computer Applications, Business Ethics & Communication.
Harnessing Non Conventional Energy
3-days Training Programme on Solar Energy (SURYAN) was conducted by Tamil Nadu Advanced Technical Training Institute (TATTI) as per the syllabus framed by National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), for faculty members of Polytechnic Colleges from 21st to 23rd September, 2015 at Central Polytechnic College, Chennai.
2-days Awareness Programme on Solar Energy, Solar Panel Installation and Maintenance was conducted for the staff members of Polytechnic Colleges implementing CIICP, in 3 regions during Jan.2016, in order to train the faculty of the Institutes to conduct short term courses on Solar Energy under Con.Ed.Cell of CIICP. These initiatives will help the trained students in getting jobs related to Solar energy.
